One of the newest hotels in Barcelona city centre, opened in March 2006.
Comfortable and modern, located on the street that separates the ancient "Barrio Gotico" from the ever-trendy "El Borne" districts.
Ciutat de Barcelona, the name translates into "City of Barcelona" in the Catalan language, offers a restaurant and bar services. There is a small pool on the roof (have a look at our photos). The terrace beside the pool is nice during the warmer periods of the day, when the streets are pretty-much too hot for walking.
The hotel is modern, very clean (we inspected this, unannounced most recently in July 2008), and well regarded locally.
Until recently there was a Sunday night jazz session held in the bar, but the bar underwent some renovations in 2008 and the jazz sessions were suspended. We expect them to return soon though.
Parking is available nearby - we timed the walk, it takes 90 seconds.
Princesa, the street on which the hotel is located is more attractive now that the local city council made the street one-way-only, which cut the traffic through it by 90%, the route is now the preserve of cyclists and pedestrians.
The hotel is located about three minutes walk from the city park, or in Catalan "Parc de la Ciutadella", which contains the City Zoo, perfect for children.
In the other direction, a five minutes walk brings you to the famous Santa Maria del Mar church and the centre of the XVIII century city, with the sea just three minutes beyond that.
The famous Picasso Museum is literally across the road and is well worth a visit.
Locally, we recommend the Basque restaurant Euskal Etxea; the market restaurant Cuines de Santa Caterina and the rather more formal Cafè de l'Acadèmia.
